The 29 January 2024 marks a significant milestone in legal cooperation between Mainland China and Hong Kong as the Mainland Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters (Reciprocal Enforcement) Ordinance (Cap. 645) took effect. This groundbreaking law establishes a framework for the reciprocal recognition and enforcement of civil and commercial judgments, bringing increased legal certainty and facilitating cross-border trade and investment.

The enactment of this new legislation signifies a major step forward in strengthening the legal ties between Mainland China and Hong Kong. It provides a robust mechanism for the recognition and enforcement of judgments, offering improved protection for parties’ interests and enhancing the overall business environment in both regions.

By streamlining cross-border legal proceedings, the new law fosters greater confidence among investors and businesses, ensuring that judgments from one jurisdiction can be effectively enforced in the other. This development reinforces Hong Kong’s position as a regional center for legal and dispute resolution services, further promoting its reputation as an international hub for business and commerce.

The Mainland Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters (Reciprocal Enforcement) Ordinance sets the stage for a new era of legal cooperation, benefiting individuals, businesses, and the overall economic growth of the region.
